The only question perhaps is: Why did it take this long?
Though South Korean rapper Psy’sGangnam Style went massively viral in mid-August, it has taken more than a month for a North Korean Kim Jong Style parody to surface. With that premise, you’re more than halfway there, but BarelyPolitical’s spoof gets in a few good lines, such as “The national pastime is to be oppressed” and “work, work, work, then sleep…torture.”
It’s funny and of course, hugely sad as well if you’re read Barbara Demick’sNothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea or Escape from Camp 14: One Man’s Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West by Blaine Harden.
While we’re unlikely to see the real Kim Jong-Un embracing Gangnam Style, the North is aware of the video’s popularity and used it to lampoon South Korean presidential candidate. The surprise move led Entertainment Weekly to ask: Who knew that invisible pony had galloped all the way across the 38th Parallel?
